Criterion Theatre Goes to AMC

Mann Theatres has shed another one. In case it slipped by you (as it did me) Mann Theatres exited the Criterion in Santa Monica in mid-June.
I was just looking at the Mann website for an address of another theatre when I noticed something missing.

No one at either Mann or AMC is talking about the terms of the transaction. Perhaps the lease was just up (it's been 20 years) and it was time to walk.

The photo here is from February of this year. See our page on the Criterion Theatre for more photos and links to other information about the theatre.

AMC now controls all of the first run venues in Santa Monica. They had been talking about building a new complex downtown. Stay tuned.

The owners of the Mann circuit, once mighty in southern California, have been letting properties go as deals can be made for individual theatres. Or when leases are up and they decide to leave. Earlier this year the Village and Bruin theatres in Westwood got snapped up by Regency Theatres.

Update 8/6/10: As I look today at Mann's website, I see its had a bit of a makeover. The Chinese always had prominent play but now it's even more so. Perhaps the plan is just to end up with Mann as the operating company for the Chinese.
