The Belasco is Ready For Action

It's been a long time coming but the Belasco Theatre, 1050 S. Hill St., has cleared all the regulatory hurdles and is ready for a fall opening.

It'll be a busy block! The Mayan, next door, had raised concerns about crowds and other potential problems. Kudos to the Los Angeles Historic Theatre Foundation, one of several organizations lobbying on behalf of the theatre. It was pointed out that this was the kind of action the buildings were designed for in the first place!

Ryan Vaillancourt of the Downtown Los Angeles News did a nice job detailing the problems operators Christina and John Kim have faced in his August 6 story "Bringing Back the Belasco."

See my Belasco Theatre page for an overview of the theatre. Among new items on the page are several views of posters for WPA productions at the Belasco that I recently ran across in the Library of Congress collection. The photo here is one I took in May showing the new signage at the theatre.
