I've long wondered why the Pico House - Merced Theatre block on North Main St. has sat vacant so long. It's part of the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument but never open. No museum, no shops, nothing.
It turns out that the block has been tied up in litigation. The developer that has long had rights to develop the 7 building area, Old Los Angeles Co., had sued the city over the expansion of the Chinese Museum. In the meantime, the buildings have sat vacant. Now the city wants some action and is soliciting proposals.
Richard Guzman, writing in the Los Angeles Downtown News on August 20, had the story about the prospects for getting the buildings on the block occupied again: "City to Look For Pico-Garnier Block Developer."
See our Merced Theatre page for more about the building.
Update: See the new story from September 3 in Los Angeles Downtown News.
