Welton Becket's 1958 Santa Monica Civic is shutting down June 30. The city is debating what to do with it. They're whining that due to the loss of CRA funding they don't have the means to do a $50 million overhaul. That's one number proposed for a renovation.
Once the site of the Academy Awards (1961-68), it's currently under utilized. The photo here from Alison Martino's Vintage Los Angeles Facebook page is of Liz Taylor (escorted by Eddie Fisher) getting up to accept her 1961 Oscar for "BUtterfield 8" (1960). Ej Cat added the photo to the page. You can click on it for a larger view.
Demolition and sale of the property is another option being considered. The facility currently isn't attracting enough bookings to pay for itself. According to the city's bookkeeping, it runs $2 million in the red every year.
The meeting to solicit community input is scheduled for June 4. There's more data about it on the Civic website's news page as well as on the website of savethecivic.org.
