The Mayan Theatre

The Mayan was a project (along with the Belasco next door) of oil tycoon Edward Doheny. The theatre, designed by Morgan, Walls and Clements, opened in 1927 as a venue for musicals.  The Mayan, at 1038 S. Hill St., now hosts musical events of another kind as a club and concert venue. The Mott Studio photo is in the collection of the California State Library. See the Mayan Theatre pages on our Downtown Theatres website for lots more information.
