Hart Theatre

1901 E. Anaheim St. Long Beach, CA 90813 | map |

Opened: It was running as a legit house in 1923 and 1924, if not earlier. It got a listing in the city directory with the 1901 address in both years. The location was on the northeast corner of Anaheim St. and Gardenia Ave. That's a block west of Cherry Ave.

An ad that appeared in the April 27, 1924 issue of the Long Beach Daily Telegram. Thanks to the Ronald W. Mahan Collection for sharing it.

There were at least three Hart brothers. Harvey H. was the manager, Lloyd T. was also associated, and Thomas H. was listed in the 1923 directory as "with" the theatre. Although the theatre itself wasn't listed in the 1925 directory, Harvey was still listed as manager, living nearby at 1911 E. Anaheim.

Closing: The date is unknown. There's currently no more data about the venue.

Status: Long Beach Transit is now on the site.

More information: For a short time the Hart Brothers also ran the Bentley Theatre, 319 on the Pike. In 1918 it was called the Hart Theatre.

It's unknown if this item in the June 20, 1924 issue of Southwest Builder and Contractor referred to the  a project that was never built:

"Theater -- Higgins & Gray, realtors and contractors, 132 Pine Ave., Long Beach, report that tentative drawings are being prepared for erecting a 1,500 seat, $125,000 theater, 80 x 140 ft., stores and office building on East Anaheim St. near the Hart Theater, Long Beach, for Hart Bros., proprietors of the Hart Theatre."

The Home Theatre was located nearby at 1625 E. Anaheim St. but it was already open when this item appeared -- and it was a smaller venue.
