Liberty Theatre

310 N. Alameda Ave. Azusa, CA 91702 | map |

Opened: Around 1918. The building is on the east side of the street several lots north of 3rd St.

Seating: 410 was the capacity listed in the 1927 Film Daily Yearbook.

Architect: Unknown

Ron Pierce notes that it's mentioned in 1918 in the Covina Argus. He also found a November 11, 1921 Argus mention that Charles Harris had purchased the then-closed theatre and was reopening it on November 18.

Closing: Harris closed it and sold his equipment in March 1928, three months after the new Azusa Theatre had opened. Ron notes that the 1929 Sanborn map shows the theatre as vacant. That newer theatre is the one that eventually ended up with the Edwards circuit as their Village Theatre.

Status: The building survives, now used by Servicemaster, a company specializing in cleanup of fire and water damage.

More Information: See the Cinema Treasures page on the Liberty. Ron Pierce has unearthed all that's known about the venue. Thanks, Ron.
