Grand Theatre

2910 Ocean Front Promenade Ocean Park (Santa Monica), CA 90405 | map - approximate |

Opening: It was running in 1912 but the opening date is unknown. It's not listed in the 1907 Santa Monica city directory.

The 1912 Santa Monica city directory compiled by the Los Angeles City Directory Co. gives the address as 2910 Ocean Front. That was in the block north of Pier Ave. and on the west side of the Promenade.

The demise: The Santa Monica Outlook of September 4, 1912, reporting on the fire that consumed the Ocean Park business district the night before, described the theatre as farther north of Pier Ave. than the Rosemary Theatre. The assumption is that the Rosemary was on the east side of the Promenade, while the Grand was on the west side.

The Outlook reported: "Northward from Pier Ave. the destruction was complete up to and including the Grand Theatre, owned by Mrs. Emma Summers, the oil queen."

More information: It would be nice to share some information about either the Oil Queen or the Grand Theatre but at the moment there isn't any.
