Opened: It's in city directories starting in 1915. The location was on the east side of the street about a block south of Washington Blvd., three blocks south of where the 10 now is. This 1945 photo of the theatre running "Song of the Islands" starring Betty Grable, and "My Friend Flicka" with Preston Foster is from the Los Angeles Public Library "Shades of L.A." collection.
Seating: 800
The Rosebud got a mention in this January 11, 1921 L.A. Times article about the formation of West Coast Theatres:
They noted
that the Rosebud and the Central Theatre were being operated by Rosebud Theatres Company. The Central was three
blocks up the street from the Rosebud, at 1629 S. Central. That 4,000
seater they mention that would be built at Mercantile Place, on Broadway
between 5th and 6th, never happened. Thanks to Ken McIntyre for locating the article.
Talkies come to the Rosebud. Thanks to Ken McIntyre for locating this May 1929 ad for a post on the Photos of Los Angeles private Facebook group. The ad appeared in the California Eagle, a newspaper covering the African-American community in Los Angeles.
Sometime around 1930 Fox West Coast bailed out of the Lincoln Theatre, three blocks farther south on Central. That theatre was taken over by the management of the Rosebud and was, for a time anyway, called the Lincoln Rosebud Theatre.
A 1930 article from the California Eagle. Thanks to Ken McIntyre for locating it.
A 1933 item from the Eagle that was spotted by Ken McIntyre. A Mr. Frank Ullman was then in charge of the place.
An October 1933 ad in the California Eagle. Thanks to Ken McIntyre for locating it for a post of southend theatre ads on the Photos of Los Angeles Facebook group.
"Sing and Like It" plus "Easy Millions." It's a fine July 1934 ad that Ken McIntyre located for a post on the Ken's Movie Page Facebook group.
A 1936 ad located by Ken McIntyre.
A May 19, 1938 ad located by Mr. Comfortably Cool for a post on Cinema Treasures.
A 1941 photo of employees in the lobby. It's in the Los Angeles Public Library collection.
A bit of a problem in February 1944. Thanks to Scott Pitzer for spotting the story.
A 1950 ad. Thanks to Ken McIntyre for finding it for a post on the Photos of Los Angeles private Facebook group.
Closing: The Rosebud evidently closed sometime prior to 1956. Joe Vogel reports on Cinema Treasures that there's nothing listed for this address in the 1956 criss-cross telephone directory.
Status: It's been demolished. The site is now part of a playground for the 20th Streer Elementary School.
On the left we're looking north on S. Central Ave. from E. 20th St. The Rosebud would have been over on the right. Photo: Google Maps - 2020
