Florencita Theatre

1830 E. Florence Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90001 | map |

Opened: 1927. This Florence area house was on the southwest corner of Florence Ave. and Walnut Dr., about six blocks east of Compton Ave.

The image is a detail from a 1952 view west by Julius Shulman in the Getty Research Institute collection. He was out photographing various branch offices for Bank of America. On the Getty site it's one of three photos listed as his Job #1352. If you have days to go browsing, wander through the thousands of photos the Getty has in their Julius Shulman Photography Archive. Thanks to Noirish Los Angeles contributor Hoss C for finding the photo in the collection for Noirish post #30563

It got a 2 manual 3 rank Reuter brand organ installation in 1927 and made it into the 1929 city directory. In the 1938 city directory it was listed as the Florence Theatre, a typo.

The Florencita was about five blocks east of the Fox Florence, a house that opened in 1932. Another theatre using the Florence name at one point was the World Theatre on S. Broadway, a venue that opened around 1921.

Seating: 575 was the number listed in the 1951 Film Daily Yearbook, according to Brian Krefft.

Closing: It was running at least into 1952, as we see by Shulman's photo.

Status: It's been demolished. There's now a car wash on the site. Joe Vogel notes that it dates from 1981.

More Information: There isn't much. See the Cinema Treasures page on the Florencita for a few tidbits.
