1625 E. Anaheim St. Long Beach, CA 90813 | map |
Opening: 1924. The debut was April 16 with Clair Windsor in "The Little Church Around the Corner," a Prizma color film, and the Century comedy short "Down to the Ship to See," according to research by Cinema Treasures contributor Dallas Movie Theaters. They note that it was a renovated space in an existing building.
Thanks to the Long Beach Heritage Museum for the 1933 postcard from their collection. It's included on their page of post-earthquake photos. The theatre entrance is behind the crowd on the right. Note the display cases and the boxoffice.
Part of a March 27 recap of 1933 earthquake fatalities. The quake was on March 10. Thanks, Ken!
Closing: Judging from the photo, it looks like the end came as a result of the 1933 Long Beach earthquake.
Looking west on Anaheim from Gaviota Ave. That Molina Medical Centers building in the center, behind the blue pickup, is on the Home Theatre site. They're using a 1627 E. Anaheim address.
More information: The Home Theatre has a recently added page on Cinema Treasures.
