Hollander Theatre

115 E. 1st St. Los Angeles, CA 90012 | map

Opening: It was evidently running in 1911. The location was on the north side of the street between Main St. and Los Angeles St.

In 1906 there was no sign of a theatre yet at 115. It's shown as a 2nd hand shop and a restaurant in this detail from page 274 of Volume 3 of the Sanborn Fire Insurance Map that's in the Library of Congress collection. On their site it's image 29 out of 113 for this volume. Main runs up the left side of the image, Los Angeles St. on the right.

Well, it's unknown what the name of the theatre even was. All that is known is that the 1911 city directory had a listing under "moving picture theaters" for Oscar Hollander at this address.

Evidently Oscar didn't stick around. He's nowhere to be found in the 1912 city directory. It appears that his premises got churched. In the 1912 and 1913 city directories the Apostolic Faith Rescue Mission is listed at 115 E. 1st.

The block, with no indication of a theatre at 115. It's a detail from plate 003 of the 1914 Baist Real Estate Survey Map from Historic Map Works. Also see the block on their 1910 Baist Map

A 1939 view of the north side of the block, looking east from Main St. The short-lived theatre would have been in that three-story building with a dome just the other side of the alley. Thanks to Ken McIntyre for locating this shot by an unidentified photographer to add as a comment to a post he did for the Photos of Los Angeles private Facebook group.

The carpet place on the corner used a 100 N. Main address. Thanks to Tony Sein for putting out a big sign. Turns out he and his Hispanic Broadcasting Co. were one of the tenants in the building with the arched entrance at 105 E. 1st.

Status: The building that housed the theatre has been demolished. It's all been redeveloped.
