Majestic Theatre

407 S. Beacon St. San Pedro (Los Angeles), CA 90731 | map - approximate |

Opened: Sometime around 1914. It would have been on the west side of the street, just south of 4th. The 400 and 500 blocks of Beacon are no more. Today the site of the Majestic is just south of the relocated 5th St., halfway along between Harbor Blvd. and Palos Verdes St.

Also nearby (and perhaps even the same location as the Majestic) was an earlier house called  Fisher's, later renamed the Idle Hour. It was running c.1910-1911.

5th, which used to go straight east to meet Harbor Blvd., acquired a wiggle to the north during the 1970s Beacon St. redevelopment project. The David Rumsay Map Collection has a fine 1938 Thomas Brothers San Pedro and Wilmington map online if you'd care to look at the original layout. A detail of the downtown area is at the bottom of the page.

The Majestic is listed in the 1914, 1918 and 1919 L.A. city directories as at 407 S. Beacon. In the 1915 directory it was listed as being at 409.

An ad from June 14, 1919 that appeared in either the San Pedro Daily News or the Pilot. It's in the collection of the San Pedro Bay Historical Society. Thanks to Michelle Gerdes for taking a photo of it.

In the 1921 directory the Majestic is again listed as being at 409 S. Beacon. In the 1922 L.A. directory it's listed as 407. In the 1923 San Pedro directory it's also 407.

Closing: Maybe 1923 was the end of it. The Majestic is not in the 1924 city directory or later editions.

Status: Whatever building the Majestic was in has been demolished. The area has been redeveloped.

On the new 5th St., about where 4th and Beacon once were. We're looking south. The Majestic would have been just down a bit and on the right, on the west side of the street. Photo: Google Maps - 2019

A detail from a 1938 Thomas Brothers San Pedro and Wilmington map appearing on the site of the David Rumsay Map Collection:

More information: Image 8 of the 1908 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map for San Pedro that's in the Library of Congress collection gives a view of the west side of the 300-400-500 blocks of Beacon St. See image 4 for the east side of the street.
