New Theatre

corner of W. 5th St. and Palos Verdes St. San Pedro (Los Angeles), CA 90731
| map - approximate |

Opening: This film house opened in 1919 according to data from local historian John M. Houston that appeared in an article by Bob Beck in the May 30, 1984 San Pedro News Pilot. The article was saved in a clipping file in the collection of the San Pedro Bay Historical Society. Thanks to Michelle Gerdes for snapping a photo of it.

Or was it 1915? That's the date Houston gives it in his article "Assembly Halls to Picture Palaces" that appeared in the November 20 and 21, 1984 issues of the News Pilot. The articles, also from the San Pedro Bay Historical Society clipping file, are reproduced at the bottom of the page for the Victoria Theatre. Houston also comments that the New was built by the Mann Brothers.

The corner of 5th and Palos Verdes isn't quite where it used to be. 5th, which used to go straight east to meet Harbor Blvd., acquired a wiggle to the north during the 1970s Beacon St. redevelopment project. The David Rumsay Map Collection has a fine 1938 Thomas Brothers San Pedro and Wilmington map online if you'd care to look at the original layout. Also see a detail of the downtown area from the map.

Closing: Sorry, no data so far.

Status: It's long gone. This whole area has been redeveloped. Nearby within a block to the east were the Empire Theatre on 5th just west of Beacon and the Star Theatre at 5th and Beacon.

Looking south on Palos Verdes St. across the current location of W. 5th St. The corner of 5th and Palos Verdes when the theatre was around would have been perhaps a quarter of the way down the block that's ahead. Photo: Google Maps - 2019

More information: Well, there isn't any yet.
