Arcade Theatre

Queen St. between La Brea and Market Inglewood, CA 90301 | map |

Opened: It was running in the 20s but the opening date is unknown. This view down Queen St. shows the Arcade Theatre half way down the block. Note the vertical sign saying "Theatre." Thanks to Ron Smith for locating the photo for a post on the Lost Angeles Facebook group.

Queen St. runs east and west one block north of Manchester. We're looking at the south side of the street with La Brea (formerly Commercial St.) in the foreground. Leonard Wynn notes that in the 1927 phone directory the Hessick building, seen on the right, was listed as being on the southeast corner of Commercial and Queen. Market St. is a block away. The building we see across Market still survives, although remodeled.

A detail from the photo. That must have been the snack wagon this side of the theatre.

This postcard version of the 20s photo from the James H. Osborne Photograph Collection appears on the website of Cal State Dominguez Hills. They date it as 1921.

Closing: The date is not known.

Status: It's been demolished. The entire south side of the block has been redeveloped.

Looking down Queen St. from La Brea. The theatre once was in the middle of the block on the right. Market St. is down there in the distance. If you go down to Market and look left, you would have a view of the Fox Inglewood. Photo: Google Maps - 2020

More Information: There isn't any yet. Cinema Treasures has a page started on the Arcade, but there's really no data there.
