3644 E. 1st St. Boyle Heights (Los Angeles), CA 90063 | map |
Opening: Sometime around 1915. It was on the south side of the street between Townsend Ave. and Rowan Ave. It's listed as the Bijou Theatre in the 1915 through 1923 city directories.
The address while it was running was 4006 E. 1st St. There was a bit of street renumbering around 1924-1925. 3644 would have been the new address if the Bijou had been still in business in 1925.
The Bijou was part of a little theatre district on E. 1st that included the Unique (across the street at what is now 3645 E. 1st) and the Colonial (at what is now 3621 E. 1st).
A few blocks farther east there was another cluster of three with the Olympus/Joy (at 2014 E. 1st), the New Lyceum/Meralta (at 2035 E. 1st) and the Athens/New Library (at 2129 E. 1st).
A 1918 L.A. Express ad located by Ken McIntyre. Note the Belvedere designation. Joe Vogel has noted: "The name Belvedere was historically applied to a good-sized swath
of the unincorporated east side...including some commercial
districts along First and Third Streets and Brooklyn Avenue..."
Closing: 1923 might have been it. Maybe it couldn't compete with the new Unique opening across the street about that time.
Status: It's been demolished. The Alliance Morgan Mckinzie High School, a charter school, is now on the site.
Looking east on 1st from Townsend St. The Bijou would have been in the middle of the block on the right. That's the vertical of the Unique Theatre on the left. Photo: Google Maps - 2019
More information: Sorry, there isn't any.
