3814 Whittier Blvd. East Los Angeles, CA 90023 | map |
Opened: Perhaps 1913. It's in the 1915 and 1916 city directories as the Family Theatre at 3814 Stephenson Ave. The street would soon get renamed Whittier Blvd.
There had been a listing in the 1913 city directory under Motion Picture
Theatres for Noah V. James at 3826 Stephenson. It's unknown as to
whether or not that was the same establishment.
The location was on the south side of the street a half block east of the city limits at Indiana St. In 1921 the Jewel Theatre was built across the street from the Family's location.
Closing: Perhaps 1916 was it.
Status: It's been demolished. The building now at the 3814 address is a newer concrete block structure.
Looking west toward Indiana St. The barber shop, 3814 1/2 Whittier, and income tax/insurance business, 3814 Whittier, are in the building where the theatre would have been. The Photo: Google Maps - 2019
More Information: Sorry, There isn't any. But do see the listing for Bell's Theatre (a mythical name). G.F. Bell was listed in 1914 as the proprietor of a theatre nearby at 3878 Stephenson. Given the fluidity of some of these early addresses (and the possiblilty of city directory mistakes) there's a chance his venue was the same as the Family Theatre.
