4511 Telegraph Rd. Belvedere Gardens (East Los Angeles), CA 90022 | map |
Opening: Perhaps 1926. It's not in the 1925 city directory but the 1926 through 1929 directories have a listing for the Link Theatre at 4483 Telegraph Rd. It was on the north side of the street just east of Eastern Ave.
Seating: 512 was the number in the 1941 Film Daily Yearbook, according to Ken Roe.
Sometime before 1932 it got renamed the Garden Theatre. In the 1932 directory it's given the address 4485 Anaheim-Telegraph Rd.
Thanks to Joe Vogel for finding an item in the February 27, 1932 issue
of Motion Picture Herald noting that Frank Pratt had taken over the
lease on the Garden Theatre, Belvedere Gardens, East Los Angeles. Joe adds: "The name Belvedere was historically applied to a good-sized swath
of the unincorporated east side...including some commercial
districts along First and Third Streets and Brooklyn Avenue..."
In the 1933 directory it's got a 4483 address. In 1934 they just called it Telegraph Rd. Beginning with the 1939 directory the Garden is given an address of 4511 Telegraph Rd. In 1942 they were back to calling the street Anaheim-Telegraph Rd.
Closing: The Garden was running into the early 1950s.
Status: It's been demolished. Whatever was on the block was in the way of the 710.
Looking east on Telegraph across Eastern Ave. The theatre would have been over on the left side of the street, where the 710 now passes above. Photo: Google Maps - 2019
More Information: See the Cinema Treasures page on the Garden Theatre. The Garden is also discussed on the site's page for the Bonito Theatre.
