Montebello Theatre

520 W. Whittier Blvd. Montebello, CA 90640 | map |

Opened: It was running in the 1920s. The opening date is unknown. It was on the north side of the street just east of 6th St. The name is fictitious. It's not yet known what it was actually called.
In this 20s view we're looking east along the north side of the 500 block toward 5th St. It's a photo from the Los Angeles Public Library collection. Also see a view they have of the bank building down on that corner at the end of the block.

Closing: The date is unknown.

Ron Strong notes that by 1945 it had become a candy store. He located this ad:

Status: It's been remodeled but the building survives.

A 30s view of the same building with the corner filled in with a newer addition. It's a Los Angeles Public Library photo. The bank building at the end of the block is on the northwest corner of Whittier and 5th.

Joe Vogel notes that the building with the arched entrance for the theatre dates from 1915 and got a major remodel in 1933. He offers some ideas about these two photos on the site's page for the Garmar Theatre. Sharp-eyed contributor Montebellodays noted that the brick building on the far right edge of the photo appears to say "Olander" across the top. That family later owned the Vogue and Garmar theatres in Montebello. It's not known what their earlier interests were.

A detail from the 30s view. They were running something with Richard Dix in it.

A 2015 view of the same block as seen in the LAPL photos -- most of it still intact. We're looking east. The lot in the foreground on the corner of 6th & Whittier has lost its building. The theatre building has gained a more exaggerated arch -- it's the brown one we see nearest us, using 520 and 522 W. Whittier addresses. The Security Bank building at the end of the block at 5th is gone and has been replaced with a new lower one. Photo: Google Maps

More Information: That's all there is at the moment.

See the pages here on this site for three other theatres in Montebello: The Cameo Theatre at 605 W. Whittier, the Vogue Theatre (1937) at 712 W. Whittier and the Garmar Theatre (1950) at 2325 W. Whittier Blvd.
