Hide Away Theatre

102 S. Maryland Ave. Glendale, CA 91204 | map |

Opening: Sorry, no information there. But it's listed under "theatres" in the Glendale city directories for 1951 and 1953. Maryland Ave. has now become Artsakh Ave. The theatre location was on the east side of the street one building south of Broadway.

The Hide Away Theatre in the movies:

Parolee Gene Nelson gets hoodwinked into helping a fugitive from a bank job in Glendale in Andre de Toth's "Crime Wave" (Warner Bros., 1954) with Sterling Hayden. Andre gives us this rare view of the Hide Away, over on the left. Thanks to Deanna Bayless, who spotted the shot on a Tropico Station blog post about the film.

We also get shots of the Alex, Glendale and Temple theatres in Glendale and, at the end, go downtown to look at the Roosevelt Theatre on Main St. See the Historic L.A. Theatres In Movies post for those views.

Closing: Presumably the Hide Away faded away in the mid 1950s.

Status: It's been demolished. There's a new building on the site.

A view south on Maryland/Artsakh from Broadway. The theatre would have been over on the left, in the middle of where this new complex now sits. Photo: Google Maps - 2019

More information: There isn't any yet.
