Majestic Theatre

115 E. Broadway Glendale, CA 91205 | map |

Opening: February 1912. It was near the northwest corner of Broadway and Maryland Ave. This section of Maryland going through part of downtown has now been renamed Artsakh Ave.

The Glendale News issue of January 21, 1912 reported that the Majestic Theatre, 4th St. east of Brand, was going to open on February 3, 1912. While east of Brand the street was called Broadway, going west it was 4th St.

The address at the time was listed in the city directories as 1105 W. Broadway. George Ellison of the Glendale Public Library notes that the Majestic appears only in two Glendale city directories. In both the 1913-14 and the 1915-16 editions it appears with the 1105 W. Broadway address.

It had a "West" address because prior to 1918 Glendale was numbering their east/west streets from A St., now called Adams. That street is about 12 blocks east of Brand.

Architect: Paul V. Tuttle, who also designed the town's 1914 Carnegie Library (demolished in 1977). It was a two story building with a 70' x 94' footprint. Joe found the data on a card in the Los Angeles Public Library's California Index.

Closing: Perhaps 1916 or 1917 was the end for the Majestic. The 1917 Glendale city directory shows two other businesses at the 1105 W. Broadway location.

In 1918 Glendale revamped their street numbering system. The east/west streets were now numbered from Brand Blvd. This former theatre location, originally with a W. Broadway address was given a new designation of 115 E. Broadway, indicating it was in the first block east of Brand. The section of this street west of Brand, what Glendale had been calling 4th St., became known as W. Broadway.

Status: The 1912 building survives but has been remodeled. The building now has a new facade that also encompasses adjacent 1921 and 1990 structures at the northwest corner of Broadway and Maryland. Thanks again to Joe Vogel for the research. His comments, appearing on the Cinema Treasures page about the Roxy:

"The L.A. County Assessor’s office lists a big lot at the northwest corner of Broadway and Maryland with three buildings on it, one of which was built in 1912, with an effective construction date of 1970. The other two date from 1921 and 1990, but all three have been remodeled to have a unified facade style. The 1912/1970 structure has 13,110 square feet.

"The Majestic's building was 70 x 94 feet, according to the California Index entry, which would give it about 6,580 feet on each floor, or a bit over 13,000 square feet. The current address 115 E. Broadway is in that building, which, judging from Google’s satellite view, has a frontage of about 94 feet on Broadway and is about 70 feet deep. I’m pretty sure this is the Majestic’s building, still standing, but altered beyond recognition."

On the left we're looking west on Broadway toward Brand. The theatre was is in the middle of what now appears to be one building. 115 is at the far left of the King Taco red awnings. They're using a 117 address for their space that encompasses several storefronts. The optometrist beyond is at 113, the entrance arch is 111. On the right we're looking north on Artsakh. The Studio Movie Grill is just up the block on the right. Photo: Google Maps - 2019

More Information: Sorry, that's all there is at the moment.
