A wider shot. The low rise building in front of the theatre has been
turned into support space for the operation, including a kitchen. On the
right across Broadway it's Geoff Palmer's new Broadway Palace apartment
complex. Photo: Bill Counter - 2018
A look upward from the sidewalk. The original milk glass letters are
still used for the address. The marquee that extended out beyond the
readerboard has been gone for decades. Thanks to Mike Hume for his 2017
photo. Visit his
Historic Theatre Photography site for hundreds of fine photos of the theatres he's explored. And don't miss his page about the
Belasco.
A flyover of the facade from Ian Wood's "
Downtown Los Angeles"
on Vimeo. He spent several months in 2014 shooting downtown theatres
and other historic buildings from a drone that resembled "a mutant
chicken." It's four minutes and forty five seconds of wonder that's not
to be missed.
The Los Angeles Historic Theatre Foundation is actively involved in the study and preservation of the
vintage theatres in the Los Angeles area. The group frequently supports
events and offers tours of the buildings.

The 11th St. side of the building. The faded sign on the side of the
building is for a church that hasn't been there since 1984. The windows
go into the dance studio. Photo: Bill Counter - 2012

The changeable milk glass letters, the last in use in the Los Angeles area. Thanks to Debra Jane Seltzer
for this c.2008 photo from her delightful site
Roadside Architecture. The photo appears on a lovely page about
Opal Glass Signs. Don't miss the site's huge section on
Movie Theatres. Thanks to Noirish Los Angeles contributor Ethereal Reality for spotting this and including it on his
Noirish post #3379.

Looking toward the alley. The windows, here seen covered, were originally just decorative arches inside. When the building was churched, they were cut out to become functional windows. Photo: Bill Counter - 2016

A look along the south side of the building from the fire escape. Thanks to Dave Bullock for his 2007 photo. Visit his website

A lovely view down from the Proper Hotel in 2024. Thanks to Paul Wright for sharing his photo with the
