233 Pine Ave. Long Beach, CA | map |
Opening: Sometime around 1907. It was on the west side of the street mid-block between 2nd (now called Broadway) and 3rd.
On a
Cal State Long Beach page about the theatre they note that "Long Beach’s Nickel Movie Days," an August 2, 1964 Independent Press Telegram article by Maymie Krythe lists the films for one week in 1907: "The Bargeman’s Daughter," "Volunteer Bethrothal, "Sheep Industry," and "An Angelic Servant." One of the programs included the ballad, "Somebody is Waiting 'neath the Southern Skies."
This nickelodeon was around long enough to appear on the 1908 Sanborn insurance map. That's the Masonic Temple in blue across the street. Although it's shown as retail here, the building just north of the Masonic had been the home of the La Petite Theatre. Thanks to Ron Mahan for locating the map on the site Historic Map Works and annotating it. Also see a wider area from the 1908 map.
Closing: Perhaps 1908 was it for the Lyceum. The theatre didn't get a listing in any of the city directories from 1907 to 1911.
Status: Whatever building the theatre was in got demolished long ago.
The Lyceum was once near the center of this image. We're looking south on Pine toward 2nd St. There was lots of later theatrical
activity on the site. The complex there now was once the home of the AMC Pine Square 16, which closed in 2010. Photo: Google Maps - 2019
More information: There isn't any yet.
